Year 6

Teachers: Mrs Brumby and Mrs Barry

Teaching Assistants: Mrs Mills

Hello Hedgehogs!

Welcome to our class page, where you can find information about PE days, homework and the learning we will be doing over the term.

Our learning question this term is linked to our Science Topic.

How many systems does our body have?

Can you guess what we will be learning about here and what our first Science topic will be based on?

Within Maths this term, we will be focusing on Place Value and Addition and Subtraction as well as continuing to practise all four mathematical calculations practised in previous year groups, including multiplication and division.

In English this term, our writing will be focused around the text ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Morpurgo and non-fiction reports based on World War One. We will be practising grammar, punctuation and spelling learnt in previous year groups and will learn to use those expected at Year 6 level.

In Reading, our texts will be mainly centred around ideas and stories about World War One, starting with 'An Eagle in the Snow' by Michael Morpurgo and Non-Fiction texts around the time period itself. We will continue to use the VIPER strategies the children already understand and will challenge the children to answers questions in a detailed way.

In History, we will be looking at World War One, how this began and how it was fought. In Geography, we will be looking closely at how the world is mapped out in accordance with times zones and climates and we will be looking at our Rights and Responsibilities in PSHE. Art this term takes us on a journey to the Italian Renaissance and we will be looking closely at the New Testament teachings in RE.

Key information:

PE Days: Tuesday and Friday

Please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit on these days. Make sure they have warm clothes and suitable shoes in case their lesson is outside.

Homework: To continue to support the children’s learning in school, we encourage them all to complete homework so that they can practise their ongoing knowledge and skills learnt. The children will be asked to complete these tasks:

-Reading
-Tackling Tables online

-SPAG.com tasks set by teacher
-Maths.co.uk tasks set by teacher

-Spelling practise

Reading: Please continue to read 4 times a week. Children should continue to log this in their reading logs or on a piece of paper and then hand into the teacher weekly.

Spelling: Every child will be given two copies of the spelling lists with the test dates labelled. So we can ensure that you have received your child’s score, can we ask that you initial it and the children return it to us before the following test. (There is also a copy of the spellings on the class page of the website).

Maths: Please continue to practice times tables with your child – this can be done in a variety of ways including the ‘Tackling Tables’ online site.

(Please do contact us if you have any queries or questions about the homework).

Over the year, children may be asked to complete additional homework, which will be communicated with the children and via Class Dojo at that time.

Mrs Brumby will be with the class Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and Mrs Barry will be with the class on a Thursday. Please make sure you contact the correct teacher via Class Dojo on their corresponding days, otherwise some messages may be missed.

If home learning needs to take place at any point throughout the year again, we will update this page accordingly with further information.

As always, if you have any questions then please get in touch via Class Dojo.

See you all soon.

Mrs Brumby and Mrs Barry

P.E.

Due to the change in how we are doing things at school, could we ask that on P.E. days children come into school wearing their full P.E. kit please, which they will then wear all day.

We will have P.E. on a Tuesday (outside) and on a Friday (inside).

Children are not allowed to wear earrings for P.E. - please continue to ensure these are removed on the above days.

Can we also ask that long hair be tied back please for PE as well as during the school day.
