Year 6

Teacher: Miss Wesley

Over this term the children will be learning about World War Two. They will discover what life was like for children who were evacuated from their homes during the war, to how the war shaped the world we live in today. There will be lots of opportunity for writing around a range of areas, including; writing narratives, diaries, letters and poems. In science, we will continue to learn about our amazing bodies and how they work. In Year 6, we have changed the way we run science lessons, so the children have more opportunity to work practically and mathematically by engaging in a variety of activities which encourage them to question the world around them. In D&T the children will be building their own Anderson Shelter and testing the strength of the ones they make through water bombing them at the end of the unit of work.

It is a busy term that the children have ahead of them, they will need plenty of support throughout. We will be doing a lot of revision during our maths and English lessons, and extra sessions will run throughout the school day.

P.E.

Please make sure the children have their P.E. kits in school all week. We have P.E. on a Monday and Friday. The children will need warm clothes as we will be heading outside this term as much as possible.

Reading and Homework

Please ensure the children are reading daily at home. Below is a link outlining 100 books recommended for all children to read before leaving primary school:

Which one's have you read? Which will you aim to read before Christmas?

Maths homework needs to be completed weekly. After discussions with parents I will be handing out arithmetic style questions for the children. They will receive 36 questions a week, the expectation is that they only do this for half an hour (this is the allocated time they will have during SATs).

Additionally, the children will be given a SPaG or reading paper this term to complete weekly. This should take no longer then 45 minutes. This will be in place of their topic homework. If you have any questions or concerns about this please feel free to ask.
