Our Theme for this term is:

Roman Britain

During the term your child will be studying:

Literacy: Historical stories, recounts; persuasion texts; poetry
The children will be working on age-related writing, reading and speaking and listening objectives, while exploring these text types.

Numeracy: Number sequences and patterns; place value including numbers below zero; multiplication for all times tables, factors, written methods for all four number operations including decimals up to 2 decimal places; extending mental methods for whole number calculations.

Science: Bio-diversity – Living things in the environment. The children will be using progressive investigation skills to find out more about their natural environment, by surveying plants and animals found around our school and actively working to improve the bio-diversity of our outside space.

ICT: The children will be continuing to improve their research skills through our history and science topics.
They will be learning how to format their work using publisher, while developing their knowledge of modeling and simulations. E-safety will continue to be a major part of our learning and all year groups will review and revisit the rules safety previously taught, to ensure that these aspects of working with ICT become second nature.

RE: We are looking at the topic “Commitment and Belonging”. Within this we will be learning about the world faiths; Christianity, Judaism and Sikhism and how members of these faiths show that they belong and that they are committed. The children will be learning to recognize how commitment to a faith strengthens the community of believers; will be asking and suggesting answers to questions about commitment leading to taking responsibility for their own and others’ lives.

History: The Romans In Britain. The children will be learning about the Roman invasion, Queen Boudicca’s Revolt and different aspects of Roman life in Britain. Yr 5 will be learning that there are different interpretations of events, using a variety of sources, while Yr 6 extend this by finding out what happened as a result of the main events. We will be visiting Peterborough Museum for a hands-on experience of Roman life through primary and secondary sources – even meeting a Roman soldier!
Art: Roman Art. Linking to our history topic on the Romans, the children will look and make their own mosaics through drawings, collage and clay work. They will also make Roman style pots,
developing their clay skills and evaluating the design of the product.

DT: Food technology is the theme for the children this term. They will learn basic rules for food hygiene, how to prepare food and then go on to design their own products. Yr 5 will be sampling pizza, Yr 6 will be sampling bread, carrying out questionnaires, and then designing and making their own product – linked to our history topic.

French: Mon Histoire – Tell me a story. The children will be learning instructions, numbers to 100 and adjectives, including how adjectives agree with masculine and feminine nouns.

Music: Performing together – We will be singing songs which have a historical theme including “The Bebop Ballad of Boudicca”, working together to produce a polished performance. The children will be beginning to develop their performance techniques, using facial expression and body language to convey an understanding of the lyrics.

PE:During this term, year 5 will spend one PE session swimming. This will involve developing progressive water safety skills and also focus on stroke practice and improvement. Year 6 will be working on batting and fielding skills in rounders. The other PE session will be athletics. The children will be taught a range of athletic skills such as running, jumping and throwing. The older children will be running longer distances, be learning to throw a wider range of equipment and carrying out more complex jumps.

PSCHE: E-safety is still a major focus. Healthy eating and sex and relationships education (Yr 6) are also being covered term.
